The Brain Day with Derek Pugh
When today’s parents were born only a small fraction of what we now know about the brain had been
discovered. Neuroscience is still a new science and our knowledge is still expanding. Today's kids
will see a remarkable development in the science of learning during their lives.
Brain compatible or brain-based learning is a theory of learning based on the brain's structure and
function. Learning will occur best if teaching and learning strategies are brain compatible and the
learner's brain is physically and biochemically prepared.
In his workshops Derek Pugh helps learners uncover some of the mysteries about their brains and
how they are organized and work using brain compatible teaching and learning strategies. Students
learn about their memory, how learning occurs, how to care for their brains and why they feel
emotions and behave as they do. They also learn the language of learning and new ways to nurture
their brain's growth during its most sensitive periods. Students learn a model of brain care based on
SEWBaD - Sleep, Exercise, Water, Breakfast and Diet.
As they learn about learning students find it both educational and fun. Knowledge like this can
become a source of health, will aid in the development of excellent attitudes and concepts towards
education, and be a valuable insight into humanity itself.
The Brain Day with Derek Pugh will assist students to better understand the complex process of learning, and
in particular, to increase their sense of control over their learning performance. Each student may get to dissect
a real brain, from a goat or sheep, build models, engage in higher-order thinking activities and play games that
demonstrate key brain processes.
